You DO use social network sites, do you? They can used very well to create and expand your personal business network and get traffic to your business website.
Mind you, these social network sites are not the same, they differ a lot from each other.
Twitter for instance, doesn't allow you to vote.But you're rendering a great service to the originator of a tweet if you Re-Tweet their message. Therefore you could say a re-tweet is a sort of vote, but it certainly works different.
Digg still is an essential social media site and it allows you to vote and comment on submitted links and stories. This is the cornerstone of Digg. A vote for a story is called a Digg and a vote against some story is a Bury.
As you can see, these social network sites have their own specialities and particularities. If you want to generate substantial website traffic from these social sites, it wouldn't be wise to mix them up.
For instance, if you use the StumbleUpon toolbar it also allows you to vote for a certain video, image or page, but creating a review is something quite different. Reviews are more appreciated and if you're the first one to review, you can earn extra points for your account. You'd better recognize this beforehand.
On its turn, LinkedIn uses so called Recommendations and if you want to recommend a certain member of LinkedIn, you absolutely have to know this person to create a good endorsement. The fact that there should be a relation between two persons in some way is typical for LinkedIn and it's this feature that makes LinkedIn a professional social network.
So, fundamentally these social network sites are meant to create and increase your own network. Hence the name.
But to achieve that goal, you absolutely exactly have to know what you're doing since they all work differently.
On top of that, if you know what you're doing and do that well, you also can, besides creating your personal or professional network, generate a lot of traffic to your own site. :-)
